The peace initiative presented to the UN Security Council outlines measures intended to address both the immediate security situation and longer-term governance challenges.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed a peace initiative presented by Sudan’s Transitional Government to the United Nations Security Council, describing it as a comprehensive framework that could lay the groundwork for ending the country’s prolonged conflict.

In a statement, Youssouf said the proposal reflects a clear understanding of the depth of Sudan’s political, security and humanitarian crisis, as well as a genuine commitment to halting violence and restoring stability.

He noted that the African Union views the initiative as an important step toward alleviating the suffering of civilians and preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“The African Union attaches great importance to the political, humanitarian and security elements outlined in the proposal, viewing them as a credible foundation for sustainable peace,” Youssouf said.

He added that constructive engagement with the initiative is essential to efforts aimed at ending armed conflict, restoring security and safeguarding Sudan’s social cohesion and national unity.

Sudan has been gripped by conflict that has displaced millions and strained humanitarian systems across the region.

The peace initiative presented to the UN Security Council outlines measures intended to address both the immediate security situation and longer-term governance challenges.

Youssouf expressed strong support for the initiative’s call for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, the protection of civilians and unhindered humanitarian access.

He also highlighted provisions related to support for refugees and internally displaced persons, disarmament, security sector reform, national reconciliation and post-conflict reconstruction.

“These components are essential for rebuilding trust, repairing the social fabric and consolidating a unified Sudanese state,” he said.

The AUC chairperson further stressed the importance of an inclusive political process anchored in transitional justice, national reconciliation and accountability for victims.

He said broad political participation and redress mechanisms are critical to preventing a relapse into violence or fragmentation.

“Such an approach is vital for achieving lasting peace, preserving societal unity and preventing a return to violence,” Youssouf noted.

Reaffirming the African Union’s long-standing position on Sudan, Youssouf underscored the need for a Sudanese-led dialogue during the transitional period.

He said national consensus on governance arrangements and unity must be achieved within a single constitutional framework to ensure legitimacy and durability.

He also emphasized the importance of free, fair and internationally supervised elections as a key milestone in meeting the Sudanese people’s aspirations for democracy, stability and accountable leadership.

The AUC chairperson said the African Union stands ready to work closely with regional and international partners to support the peace process.

He cited the United Nations, the Arab League, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and other international actors as key stakeholders in accompanying Sudan’s efforts toward peace.

“The African Union reaffirms its steadfast commitment to Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to promoting regional and international peace and security,” Youssouf said.
